Small rooms with big impact

A powder room is a small room with a toilet and basin, usually near the living areas, used by guests and by the household during the day. Many homes in Moe, Newborough and Morwell have a separate toilet beside the bathroom, a second toilet near the laundry, or a small powder room added in a later extension. These rooms are often overlooked, with tired tiles, a cracked cistern, a tiny basin or none at all, and a light that hums. Because they are small and used by visitors, a well-designed powder room has a big effect on how a home feels.

We renovate powder rooms, guest toilets and separate toilets, and create new powder rooms where space allows.

What a good powder room includes

  • A toilet that suits the space, often wall-faced or wall-hung to make the room feel larger.
  • A basin for handwashing, which many older separate toilets lack.
  • A mirror and good light at the basin.
  • Ventilation with an exhaust fan ducted outside.
  • A hand towel rail or ring within reach of the basin.
  • Storage for spare toilet paper and cleaning products.
  • A durable floor that is easy to clean.

Design ideas

Make a statement

Because a powder room is small and used briefly, it is a good place for bolder design. Patterned floor tiles, a dark colour on the walls, a decorative wallpaper above a tiled dado, a sculptural basin or a striking light fitting can create a memorable room without overwhelming the house.

Corner and compact basins

Where space is tight, a small corner basin or a narrow wall-hung basin with a compact tap can fit where nothing else would. Some toilets are available with a handbasin integrated into the cistern lid.

Wall-hung or wall-faced toilets

A toilet with a concealed cistern sits closer to the wall and shows more floor, making a small room feel bigger and easier to clean.

Lighting

A pendant, wall sconce or backlit mirror can add character. A sensor light is convenient for guests.

Doors

In a narrow room, a door that opens outward or a cavity sliding door can make a big difference to how easy the room is to use.

Separate toilets beside bathrooms

In many post-war Moe homes, the toilet is in a narrow room beside the bathroom. Renovating it at the same time as the bathroom allows the two rooms to be designed together. Sometimes it makes sense to remove the wall and combine them; sometimes the household values a separate toilet, especially with several people sharing one bathroom. We talk through the options and help you decide.

Creating a new powder room

Adding a powder room can make a big difference in a family home or a house used for entertaining. Possible locations include:

  • Under a staircase in a two-storey home.
  • In a reorganised laundry.
  • In part of a large hallway or storage cupboard.
  • As part of an extension or alteration.

The main considerations are drainage, ventilation and access. In homes on timber floors, drainage can often be run beneath the floor. In slab homes, it may involve cutting the slab. For rural homes on septic or on-site wastewater systems, any new connection must suit the system’s capacity. We assess these questions at the consultation.

Waterproofing powder rooms

Whether a powder room needs waterproofing under AS 3740 depends on its fixtures and whether there is a floor waste. Where waterproofing is required, we follow the standard. Even where it is not strictly required, sealing junctions around the toilet and basin helps protect the floor from splashes and spills.

Ventilation

Toilets and powder rooms need good ventilation. Many older separate toilets have only a small window or a vent in the wall. We install an exhaust fan sized for the room and ducted outside, often linked to the light with a run-on timer.

Materials

In a small room, quality materials make a big impression and the quantities are modest, so it can be a good place to use a special tile or tapware finish. Durable, easy-to-clean surfaces are still important, especially around the toilet. Porcelain floor tiles, a moisture-resistant vanity and sealed joints keep the room hygienic.

Our process

  • Consultation: we look at the room, check the plumbing, drainage, electrical and ventilation, and talk about how it is used.
  • Design and scope: we draw a layout, help you choose fixtures and finishes, and prepare a written scope.
  • Strip-out: the old fixtures and finishes are removed, with asbestos testing first in older homes.
  • Rough-in: licensed plumbers and electricians install new services.
  • Waterproofing: where required, to AS 3740.
  • Tiling and fit-off: tiles, toilet, basin, mirror, lighting and accessories are installed.
  • Handover: a clean room, a walk-through and documentation.

Accessibility in powder rooms

A powder room can also serve as an accessible toilet near the living areas, which is valuable for older visitors or household members with mobility needs. A wider door, a comfortable toilet height, grab rails on solid blocking and lever tapware make the room easier for everyone to use.

Styles that suit valley homes

Post-war character

In a 1950s weatherboard in Moe or Newborough, a powder room can nod to the era with a simple pedestal or wall basin, hexagon or penny-round floor tiles, a painted timber dado or tiled wainscot and a classic round mirror. Brass or chrome tapware with a simple profile suits these homes well.

Mid-century warmth

Many brick veneer homes from the 1960s and 1970s suit warm timber, terrazzo-look tiles, rounded mirrors and muted greens, ochres or terracotta tones. A powder room is a good place to bring these colours in without committing a whole bathroom to them.

Modern and minimal

In a newer home in Moe, Newborough or Trafalgar, a powder room might feature large-format porcelain, a floating stone basin, a concealed cistern and a backlit mirror. A single strong colour or a textured feature wall can add personality.

Rural and relaxed

In a farmhouse near Thorpdale, Narracan or Willow Grove, a powder room near the back door often gets heavy use from people coming in from outside. Robust materials, a deep basin, a textured floor tile and plenty of hooks work well.

Keeping it clean and fresh

Powder rooms are used often by many people, so hygiene matters. Wall-hung toilets and basins leave the floor clear for mopping. Rimless toilet pans are easier to clean. Sealed joints around fixtures prevent splashes from soaking into the floor. A well-ducted exhaust fan keeps the air fresh. Sensor taps or lever taps reduce how often surfaces are touched. These simple choices keep a powder room pleasant to use with little effort.

Working around the household

A powder room renovation is usually quicker than a full bathroom, and most households can use another toilet in the house while the work is underway. If the powder room is the only toilet, we plan the work to keep the time without it as short as possible and discuss temporary arrangements in advance.

Small rooms, careful details

Because powder rooms are small, every detail is seen up close. Tile cuts around the toilet pan and vanity, the alignment of grout lines, the finish of sealant joints and the neatness of tapware installation all matter more than in a larger room. We plan these details carefully. Lighting also has a big effect in a small room; a pendant or wall lights either side of the mirror can transform a dark powder room. Ventilation is still important, especially in internal rooms without a window, so we install an exhaust fan ducted outside. A powder room is also an ideal place for a bolder tile, wallpaper or basin, because it is used for short visits and seen by guests.
